Janice Mahesan

Migration Lawyer

  • EDUCATION

I graduated from my Bachelor of Law (Honours) from the U.K and did additional units in Monash University, Melbourne to meet the requirements for an Australian law degree. I then undertook a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice which enabled me to be admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria as an Australian lawyer.

I have studied in Australia, United Kingdom and Malaysia.

  • PROFESSIONAL LIFE

I started off as an intern in a migration agency part-time while studying the additional units in Monash and my Graduate Diploma. I worked there for about 4 years before becoming an Immigration lawyer where I started handling my own clientele.

I work with all types of visas – but have plenty of experience in general skilled migration, employer sponsorship visas, and partner visas.

I have worked with a lot of employers who sponsor their potential candidates via 482 (Temporary Skill shortage) visas and 186 (Employer nomination scheme), I am also gaining experience in Labour Agreements, in particular the new Aged Care Labour Agreement pathway.

  • Hobbies

My utmost favourite thing to do outside of work is to hit the gym. Nothing makes me feel more powerful than lifting some weight. It is also my favourite hobby and helps with my mental health.

I also enjoy attending women empowerment-related events. I enjoy being in a space where I am amongst other strong, independent, and career/business-oriented women who come together and share their stories. The energy in that space is PHENOMENAL!

Other hobbies include (but are not limited to): Reading, exploring new cafes, taking my dog on adventures, and binge-watching TV shows (mostly with a good female lead).

I sometimes do modelling, especially for small businesses that are just starting up and need that extra support.

Content creation – where I draw attention to the importance of mental health and the stigma still attached to it and gender inequality. I have also started creating content relating to migration law to help simplify immigration requirements.

  • What Motivates you?

My parents. I moved to Australia an 11- year old, dependent on my parents. My father struggled to pull finances so we could pay exorbitant legal and visa fees to obtain PR just for me to get a better education and lifestyle in the near future. 11-year-old Janice did not understand the hard work and sacrifices both my parents had undergone to set up my future in Australia. But growing up, I was able to fully appreciate and value the impact of their sacrifices. Every time I have a consultation with a potential visa applicant, I am always reminded about how much my parents gave to get me where I am today, and nothing motivates me more than that to help another family achieve the same. This is my WHY.
